Flash back to1960, when Yoko Ono and Yayoi Kusama were bringing performance art to the fashion world. Today’s IMITATION by Tara Subkoff carries on this tradition.
Viewers of the presentation were greeted by the show’s title: This is NOT a fashion show. 60 real women in flesh tone leotards and sheer cinnamon pantyhose, from age 5 to 65 rimmed a large gallery space, each facing outward toward a mirror. As the leotard-clad choir in the front of the house sang Christmas carols, the women in the gallery pondered what to wear in what seemed like a trance. They tried on one dress after another as they searched madly through the pile of options layered at their feet. All women wore medium-length almond-shaped flesh-colored marbleized nails. Art, indeed.
